Episode 21 – SPLASH

Our Summer of Love continues this week with SplashRon Howard’s 1984 tour de fish (Yeah, we said it). Join us as we ask the tough questions: Was Tom Hanks better before he knew he was Tom Hanks? Are mermaids and the Amish really that dissimilar? Is a man-mermaid relationship bestiality? (Jury’s still out on that one).

Happy fishing!

Episode 20 – 500 DAYS OF SUMMER

Join us for the latest episode in our summer of love series, where we discuss the 2009 film 500 Days of Summer. Is there a more adorable couple than Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel? Is this movie really dealing with subversive gender roles? What is the best advice we received from Betty White? Is this film another example of a refreshing, self-aware ‘relationship’ movie or a test-case for how much cute is too much cute? For answers to these and other important questions, check out our newest episode!

P.S. did anyone notice that there is a random little sister in this movie? … just us?

Episode 19 – ONLY YOU

Ouija, fortune tellers, Italian getaways, chance encounters… delusion, deception, stalkers… perfect romantic comedy fodder. Join us this week as we discuss the 1994 film Only You, where we learned that no one can play bat-shit crazy and super creepy more charming than Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey Jr. Awww love.

Episode 18 – DIRTY DANCING

Welcome to the first of our summer movies!  Join us as we discuss the 1987 romance Dirty Dancing. This 80s classic treads the water of being a sweet coming of age story, mindless-fun dance movie, feminist narrative and so bad it’s good again. Is it 1963 or 1987? Who knows?! Who cares?! It’s hard not to get behind the epic romance (and the dirty dancing) between Baby and Johnny Castle. Just don’t blame us if you find yourself adding “I’ve Had the Time of My Life” on your iPod. That’s on you.

Episode 17 – BEFORE SUNRISE/SUNSET/MIDNIGHT

Join us this week for a discussion on the 18-year film experiment that is Before Sunrise (95), Before Sunset (04) and Before Midnight (13). We talk all things Celine and Jesse from their first chance meeting on a train to Vienna, to walking through the streets of Paris to driving their SUV through Greece. It’s tough to watch two hopeful young romantics become jaded adults and eventually middle-aged parents, but exciting to watch this long-term relationship (on many levels) unfold over three films that dare to deal with the comedy and tragedy of real romantic love. We also discuss which movie Ethan Hawke is cuter in… in case you were wondering.
